Monthly, seasonal and annual indices using slightly different data sources for the southern station are also available. Since there is no unique way to define the spatial structure of the NAO, it follows that there is no universally accepted index to describe the temporal evolution of the phenomenon. Most modern NAO indices are derived either from the simple difference in surface pressure anomalies between various northern and southern locations, or from the PC time series of the leading usually regional EOF of sea level pressure SLP. Many examples of the former exist, usually based on instrumental records from individual stations near the NAO centers of action, but sometimes from gridded SLP analyses. A major advantage of most of these indices is their extension back to the midth century or earlier. A disadvantage of station-based indices is that they are fixed in space. Given the movement of the NAO centers of action through the annual cycle, such indices can only adequately capture NAO variability for parts of the year. Moreover, individual station pressures are significantly affected by small-scale and transient meteorological phenomena not related to the NAO and, thus, contain noise. An advantage of the PC time series approach is that such indices are more optimal representations of the full NAO spatial pattern; yet, as they are based on gridded SLP data, they can only be computed for parts of the 20th century, depending on the data source.
Why Is Dating in the App Era Such Hard Work?
From Pulitzer Prize-winner David Zucchino comes a searing account of the Wilmington riot and coup of , an extraordinary event unknown to most Americans. It was a bustling port city with a burgeoning African American middle class and a Fusionist government of Republicans and Populists that included black aldermen, police officers and magistrates. There were successful black-owned businesses and an African American newspaper, The Record.
But across the state—and the South—white supremacist Democrats were working to reverse the advances made by former slaves and their progeny. In , in response to a speech calling for white men to rise to the defense of Southern womanhood against the supposed threat of black predators , Alexander Manly, the outspoken young Record editor, wrote that some relationships between black men and white women were consensual. His editorial ignited outrage across the South, with calls to lynch Manly.
Many of these are artifacts of the internet, from online dating to sadomasochistic feminist pornography sites to webcam peepshows such as one.
When Tinder became available to all smartphone users in , it ushered in a new era in the history of romance. It aimed to give readers the backstory on marrying couples and, in the meantime, to explore how romance was changing with the times. But in , seven of the 53 couples profiled in the Vows column met on dating apps. The year before, 71 couples whose weddings were announced by the Times met on dating apps. Dating apps originated in the gay community; Grindr and Scruff, which helped single men link up by searching for other active users within a specific geographic radius, launched in and , respectively.
With the launch of Tinder in , iPhone-owning people of all sexualities could start looking for love, or sex, or casual dating, and it quickly became the most popular dating app on the market. But the gigantic shift in dating culture really started to take hold the following year, when Tinder expanded to Android phones, then to more than 70 percent of smartphones worldwide.
The ‘Dating Market’ Is Getting Worse
At the key moment of this nontraditional Jewish wedding, the friend presiding over the ceremony took a moment to explain the Hebrew word kadosh. If only you could Google your way to The One. The search engine, in its own profane way, is a kadosh generator. Its primary goal is to find the perfect Web page for you out of all the Web pages in the world, to elevate it to No. The Santa Cruz couple had met in a time-honored way—through a friend—but the number of such encounters is decreasing.

The Masthead, the membership not to be confused with subscription program that The Atlantic launched two years ago , will be folded in with the premium package. The publication had originally said it would test a paywall with some readers in January ; The Wall Street Journal reported last month that owner Laurene Powell Jobs requested the delay to allow more time for hiring and platform development. All articles on TheAtlantic. How about two? Joshua Benton November 13, As the paywall rolls out, the question now is how many readers will be ready to pay for yet another digital news subscription.
Only 16 percent of Americans say they are willing to pay for any online news. Especially if that second or third site costs as much or more than their favorite national daily? But that second or third subscription requires a level of devotion that can be hard to sustain in a digital environment where the links come at you from every direction. And so The Atlantic will continue to be open to experimentation, and to making content available on platforms beyond its own.

With consecutive quarterly growth in both print and digital advertising sales, The Atlantic has emerged as a vanguard in an industry harassed by declining ad revenues and falling circulations. And the credit, its executives say, belongs to the “digital first” strategy it embraced four years ago. In fact, The Atlantic sold more print ads in October than it had in any other month since David Bradley acquired the title in Traffic to its three web properties — TheAtlantic.
Five years ago, no one could have foreseen that The Atlantic , a year-old publication founded by a collective of New England intellectuals, would have become a leader in the so-called digital age. Bradley says a succession of strategic hires in the last half of the decade turned things around for the magazine, however. Among them: James Bennet, the New York Times correspondent who became editor of the magazine in , and Justin Smith, who became president of Atlantic Consumer Media in after leaving his post as president and publisher of The Week.
Why Online Dating Can Feel Like Such an Existential Nightmare
Americans are now considered prime candidates for dating from age 14 or younger to close to 30 or older. For an activity undertaken over such a long period of time, dating is remarkably difficult to characterize. Sixth-graders claim to be dating when, after extensive negotiations conducted by third parties, two of them go out for ice cream.
Dating can be used to describe exclusive and nonexclusive relationships, both short-term and long-term. The purpose of dating is not much clearer than its definition. The potential spouses assessed each other in the privacy of her home, her parents assessed his eligibility, and either they got engaged or he went on his way.
